Position Summary

The Director of Production reports directly to the Executive Producer and General Manager and is instrumental in all aspects of MTC’s production department, Facilities and Capital Improvements. The Director of Production works directly with every play’s creative team, to facilitate the realization of their designs. The Director of Production is a member of MTC’s senior staff working closely on season planning, budget planning, and management of the Production staff. The Director of Production will oversees the pre-production, production, and post-production process for MTC’s Season while adhering to established parameters, schedules and budgets. Primary duties include managing all production elements and logistics, hiring and supervising union and non-union production staff, production payroll, accounting and budgeting, scheduling production and theatre resources, operations and maintenance for three facilities. This position works closely with MTC Staff, directors, designers, stage managers, technical crews, consultants and vendors. Critical for success in this position is the ability to work in concert with others, manage staff and track multiple short term and long term projects at once.

Essential Duties

  • ​Hire, train and supervise the Production Management staff. 

  • Hire and oversee all Production departments including Production department heads and Union Crews across three theatres. 

  • Work with the Artistic Producing Team, Executive Producer, Finance Director and General Management team on season planning, scheduling and budgeting. 

  • Act as the liaison between the Production and administrative departments. 

  • Create and implement all season scheduling related to production: season calendars, rehearsal and tech schedules, design deadlines, etc. Advise on most appropriate scheduling of events within the MTC production schedule. 

  • Budget responsibility for all production areas including material, rental and labor budgets. This includes the preparation of the annual budgets for production areas. 

  • Collaborate with directors, designers and MTC Artistic Staff to insure the artistic vision of each production remains within the available resources of time, budget, and personnel. 

  • Oversee and run and attend all production related meetings as well as monitor the progress of each Production sub-department throughout the production process in concert with the Production Management Team. 

  • Confirm each production is well archived. 

  • Approve use of production spaces and provide technical support for all special events, building rentals, and non-production activities with Friedman Theatre Manager or Landlords. 

  • Process weekly payroll for Production staff. 

  • Work closely with Artistic and Development staff on the planning and production of the annual Fall Benefit, Spring Gala and other special events when production support or space is needed. 

  • Coordinate all PR requests requiring production support with the Marketing Department. 

  • Work closely with other members of the senior staff on long range planning in order to achieve the overall goals of the Manhattan Theatre Club. 

  • Represent Production staff at Board meetings. 

  • Maintain a healthy and safe and respectful working environment.

Skills and Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have 5+ years of Theatrical Production Management experience, excellent written and verbal communication skills, sharp eye for detail, exceptional organizational skills and the ability to coordinate and prioritize multiple projects at once. A strong working knowledge of theatrical production procedures and practices including experience working with and managing theatrical production vendors is essential. Must possess strong computer skills especially proficiency with MS Office is required. Experience working in a union employment environment and familiarity with IATSE, USA and AEA agreements is preferred. Evening, weekend and early morning hours will be required. Occasional physically demanding work, such as lifting and moving equipment will be required.

 

This individual needs to be a true leader, able to cultivate people to build and maintain a cohesive team. Must show emotional and cultural intelligence though trust and collaboration, while fostering mutual respect, and empowering the growth of others.

Manhattan Theatre Club (MTC), a Tony Award-winning nonprofit theatre dedicated to the production of contemporary plays and musicals, seeks a full time Director of Production. Founded in 1970, MTC has been the creative and artistic home for America’s most gifted theatrical artists, producing works of the highest quality by contemporary American and international playwrights. MTC produces eight plays annually in Broadway's Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on West 47th Street and off-Broadway at the historic NY City Center complex on West 55th Street.

MTC’s mission is to produce theatrical works of the highest quality, most often by living playwrights. Equally important to us is the quality of artists who bring our shows to life. We believe in working with a wide range of talent, from novices to highly experienced artists and we are committed to ensuring that a diversity of voices is represented on our three stages. This season, a total of 50% of our productions, including two of our three Broadway shows, are written and directed by BIPOC artists.

Covid Safety Policy

MTC hired an indoor air quality specialist, Dr. Marwa Zaatari, who reviewed the MTC HVAC ventilation on the 8th and 9th floor to ensure we are providing you the best possible air quality in the office. Compliant ventilation systems are in place and will be maintained and operated properly. Upgrades to our HVAC system have increased circulation of fresh air, as well as upgraded Merv 13 High Efficiency air filters as recommended.

 

Anyone who is experiencing COVID-19 symptoms shall alert Human Resources. They will be directed to leave the building immediately and referred to the appropriate medical services. In the event the individual cannot immediately leave the building, they will be directed to an isolated room where they will stay until they are able to leave on their own or with the assistance of a medical professional. HR will follow reporting protocols.

 

9th Floor Guidelines

  • Only employees that are fully vaccinated and have received their booster shot if eligible are allowed on the 9th floor. Evidence of vaccination must be provided to HR through the online portal.

  • In accordance with current CDC guidance, all employees are required to wear KN95 or equivalent masks, regardless of vaccination status. 9th floor staff may remove their masks at their personal work stations. KN95 masks are available on the 9th floor.

  • Please refrain from eating or drinking during meetings, with the exception of a quick drink.

  • Entry will be allowed on the 9th floor with keycard access only. We are asking for everyone’s help to keep the 9th floor safe and secure.

  • Guests, vendors, and other non-MTC personnel are allowed on the 9th floor only if they have provided vaccination proof (with booster if eligible) to HR. Even with proof of vaccination, they must enter on the 8th floor and sign in with reception.

  • All pick up and deliveries will be made to the 8th floor reception desk. This includes deliveries that previously were made to the 9th floor.

  • We will continue our practice of gender fluid bathrooms and bathrooms on the 9th floor will not have occupancy limits. Please use the bathroom that best aligns with your personal gender identity or expression.

 

8th Floor Guidelines

 

  • Employees who are not fully vaccinated or who have not provided evidence of being vaccinated are limited to the 8th floor and must continue to wear a KN95 or equivalent mask and maintain 6ft social distancing upon entering the office.

  • Guests, vendors, and unvaccinated staff will be limited to the 8th floor, unless proof of vaccination (with booster) is provided to HR.

  • The DCM call room is considered a fully vaccinated space and is exempt from 8th floor protocols.

  • KN95 or equivalent masks will be required for ALL on the 8th floor, including vaccinated employees. If anyone does not have their own KN95 or equivalent mask, a KN95 mask will be provided at no cost.

  • When possible, please allow 6’ of distance between you and another person.

  • All pick up and deliveries will be made to the 8th floor reception desk.

  • All Bathrooms on the 8th floor will be non-gendered, single user bathrooms.

 

SICK POLICY

 

We encourage staff members who are not feeling well to stay home. If you are ill to a point that you feel you cannot work, you have sick time and we want you to use that time. Alternatively, if you are feeling run down with a slight fever, cough, or other symptoms that are potentially COVID related, but you feel well enough to work, please let your supervisor know and a remote work day can generally be arranged.vaccinated
