Position Summary

 

An essential member of MCT’s day-to-day producing team, the Production Manager ensures the safe, on-time, within-budget, and excellent execution of all production elements of MCT’s artistic offerings, events, and collaborative partnerships, and also supports the well-being of contracted artists. The position collaborates closely with the Artistic Director to determine each season’s artistic scope, vision, and collaborators, and with the Managing Director on budgeting and financial tracking as well as effective and efficient document processing, communication, and reporting. This position reports dually to the Artistic Director and Managing Director, and interacts daily with MCT staff, artists, and stakeholders.

 

Compensation for this full-time, exempt position is $40-45,000 per year, and includes a competitive benefits package. The Production Manager’s schedule is based on a 40-hour, 5-day work week, with extended hours during tech processes and some general week-to-week evening and weekend flexibility required.

General Expectations ​​

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Production Management

  • Collaborate with Artistic Director to:

    • ensure uniform high standard of execution and presentation of all production elements

    • determine personnel needs, set production parameters, ensure that production expectations are scaled appropriately to resources, and identify potential collaborators

    • create production budgets and process timelines

  • Collaborate with Managing Director to:

    • maintain positive relationships with all union or other production-related partners and uphold compliance with any contract stipulations

    • maintain or revise all production budget targets before, during, and after production processes

    • track and reconcile all production expenses

    • contract all season artists and production personnel

  • Collaborate with individual production creative teams to:

    • ensure accurate understanding of available resources, parameters, and deadlines

    • maintain and share all design documentation including preliminary guidelines and finished renderings internally and externally

    • ensure accurate and timely communication between all creative team members as well as between creative team and MCT staff

  • Supervise production processes and all production personnel

  • Communicate all necessary production information to MCT staff and stakeholders, and develop and refine practices for doing so as necessary

  • Ensure production spaces are clean and ready for occupancy, and equipment is maintained at safe functional capacity

  • Coordinate, lead, and note Production meetings and Design meetings with MCT staff and production personnel

  • Ensure adherence to all applicable health, safety, legal, and organizational requirements, and collaborate with Artistic Director and Managing Director on their implementation

  • Maintain orderly prop, scenery, costume, and other production stock, equipment, or supplies, and control inventory and/or generate income by selling or renting stock as possible

  • Monitor quality of production personnel work and provide constructive feedback and guidance as necessary

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Company Management

  • Collaborate with Managing Director on financial personnel reporting including but not limited to Workers Compensation, Annual Audit, and pay schedules

  • Coordinate travel and housing for non-local artists

  • Oversee accident reports and first aid and process any associated paperwork

  • Create structures that support the health and well-being of artists and production personnel, including maintaining and providing updated lists of locally available resources

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: General

  • Attend MCT Staff and Board of Trustees meetings

  • Serve as a backup for performance production hosting or other patron-facing events during performance runs

  • Attend rehearsal hall run-throughs, previews, and opening night performances

  • Other duties as mutually agreed, understanding that additions to and deletions from the position will naturally occur as part of a central role in an evolving institution and industry

Skills and Qualifications

  • Prior experience in Production Management, Technical Direction, or Production Stage Management

  • Working knowledge of theater production practices, including but not limited to scenic, rigging, lighting, sound, costume, and projection construction, equipment, and design principles

  • Working knowledge of AEA, SDC, and USA protocols and procedures

  • Company management, HR, or contracting experience preferred

  • Microsoft Suite proficiency and advanced Excel and spreadsheet experience required

  • Must demonstrate ability to balance numerous ongoing tasks and problem-solve creatively

  • Applicant must have a reliable means of transportation to the Third Ward District

 

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds with team assistance 

  • Work will require extended use of a computer keyboard and monitor.

About Milwaukee Chamber Theatre

 

Nearing its 50th season of continuous production, Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, partners with other arts organizations, community-based organizations, and universities to produce thought-provoking and emotionally resonant productions alongside innovative outreach programs on an intimate, human scale. As a leader in developing Milwaukee and Wisconsin’s theater community, MCT provides regular employment and a stable artistic home to local theater professionals through a five-play subscription season, biannual Young Playwrights Festival Showcase, and the Montgomery Davis Play Development Series. Operating on an SPT 8+ contract, MCT performs in the 350-seat Cabot Theatre and 99-seat Studio Theatre in the Broadway Theatre Center in Milwaukee’s Third Ward neighborhood. Mission

MCT's mission statement currently reads: The mission of the Milwaukee Chamber Theatre is to produce intimate, high-quality, professional theatrical works of literary merit that engage and challenge the audience, while employing and nurturing principally local theatre artists.

This will be revised as part of a strategic planning process beginning in Spring, 2022.

Anti-Racism Statement and Action Steps

Milwaukee Chamber Theatre does not currently have an anti-racism statement and action plan in place. The Artistic and Managing Directors assumed leadership of the company at the onset of the pandemic, and will include that work in the strategic planning process that will be launched in conjunction with the Board of Trustees in Spring 2022.

Philosophically, under its new leadership MCT has committed institutional practice to creating a desegregated space where all Milwaukeeans can feel essential to a conversation about how our community can be its best self to everyone who calls it home—an essential role for an arts non-profit to fill in America’s most segregated city. The current leadership team's first two seasons have included immediate programmatic and hiring practice shifts to that end, including producing during the pandemic what is believed to be the most proportionally representative season ever staged by a Wisconsin PWI (and continuing that trajectory in our first in-person season), as well as founding the first-ever Milwaukee Black Theater Festival in 2020 and co-producing it in 2021. MCT's website carries both Black Lives Matter and Land Acknowledgment statements. Representation statistics for the past two seasons can be provided on request.

Covid Policy

 

Milwaukee Chamber Theatre maintains a fully vaccinated workplace in accordance with AEA's Full Vaccinated Safety Rider, and all staff and production personnel currently test three times per week. All other companies operating in the same facility also require fully vaccinated status for all employees. All audience members are required to wear masks at all times in the facility and present either proof of full vaccination or a negative COVID test from a sample taken not longer than 72 hours prior to entry.
