Position Summary

 

CPT is hiring a Technical Director (TD). This role requires leadership and initiative and reports to the Executive Artistic Director (EAD). This is a senior staff role participating in leading the theatre and supporting the EAD in strategy and decision-making.

 

The TD manages and implements all technical aspects of productions, except costumes, for CPT’s season, consisting of 6-12 full productions, 2-4 new work development series, 2 multi-site special events, and other artistic projects. CPT programs in two theatres, various onsite studios, and occasionally produces work offsite in nontraditional spaces. The TD will lead the rebuilding of this department and will work with the EAD and the artistic department to grow capacity. For the 2021/2022 Season, the TD oversees and works with CPT’s Technical Associate and a limited number of over-hire technicians to implement all sets, lighting, video, and sound installations. The TD is responsible for oversight of CPT’s scene shop and technical equipment. The TD is also offered opportunities to work as a designer. Candidates must have four years full-time technical theatre work (or equivalent as a freelancer) with excellent technical skills in the following areas: sound technician, lead electrician, and set construction. Expertise in some of the following skills is also a plus: sound design, lighting design/video design/implementation, and scenic design. The successful candidate will be collaborative, eager to learn new ways of working, service oriented, and highly self-motivated.

Overall Responsibilities

  • Implementation of Technical Aspects for Productions

  • Create working drawings for set construction

  • Create working drawings for set construction

  • Build and install sets for productions

  • Hang, patch, and focus light plot for productions and series Install sound plot for productions and series

  • Install and focus projectors as needed for productions and series

  • Manage Scene Shop and Technical Equipment

  • Manage Full Time Technical Associate

  • Maintain scene shop to meet CPT standards of safety, organization, and cleanliness

  • Maintain, repair, and purchase technical equipment as needed

  • Manage Production Calendar and Budgets

  • Evaluate designs for budget, both financial budget and time/capacity budget

  • Create, build, and schedule for all productions

  • Create over-hire schedule/need for all productions

  • Work with designers to ensure final designs are submitted in a timely manner

  • Manage Technicians

  • Manage one full time technical associate

  • Recruit and retain skilled over-hire technicians for occasional, short-term work

  • Supervise skilled and unskilled short-term technicians

  • Train and respond to technician questions

Skills and Qualifications

  • The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate the following:

    • Excellent project management skills

    • The ability to assess, prioritize, and drive multiple productions at the same time

    • Strong communication skills

    • Ability to collaborate and be a team player

    • Ability to manage small, short-term teams

    • Excellent technical skills in at least three of the following areas:

      • Sound design/sound technician

      • Lighting design/Lead electrician

      • Scenic design/set construction

      • Video design/Video implementation

    • Ability to move a 4x8 platform (with cart)

    • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Excel

    • Working knowledge of VectorWorks, QLab, and other industry standard programs

  • 4 years of full-time technical theatre work or equivalent as freelancer

  • 3 years of experience in technical direction or equivalent

  • Tracking and managing production budgets and expenses

  • Some management experience

  • Attention to detail and accuracy while working on multiple projects and tasks

  • Ability to work efficiently and calmly in a fast-paced environment

  • Ability to re-prioritize tasks as they arise

  • Collaborative, eager to learn new ways of working, service oriented, and highly self-motivated

Mission

CPT is a nationally recognized center for contemporary performance. Its mission is to raise consciousness and nurture compassion through groundbreaking theatre and life-changing education programs. CPT implements this mission through its annual theatrical season, featuring between 6-12 adventurous professional productions and a robust series of new play development programs that support writers and devisers at multiple points in the creative process. CPT’s acclaimed education programs engage communities in devising new works that speak to contemporary issues and empower participants to work for positive change in our community. CPT is home to community ensembles Teatro Público de Cleveland and Masrah Cleveland Al-Arabi, and CPT annually presents Station Hope, a large-scale community arts festival. CPT’s annual budget is around $2.5 million a year. CPT has 22 full-time staff members.

A Commitment Towards a Theatre of Equity and Justice (Anti-Oppression, Pro-Liberation)

 

Cleveland Public Theatre is committed to becoming an anti-racist organization and dismantling and disrupting racism, both in the front-facing work we do and in our internal practices. We believe ongoing action and accountability are critical to making the best art and to creating a theatre that is equitable, diverse, inclusive, and truly moving towards liberation.

Cleveland Public Theatre Acknowledges Predominantly White Institutions, including CPT, have compounded racial inequities by repeating structural norms.

 

CPT acknowledges:

  • Sustained racialized public policies, internal practices, and both conscious and unconscious biases have resulted in unequal access for BIPOC artists and have excluded BIPOC individuals from arts management. The multi-generational nature of these systems has resulted in compounded inequities.

  • The historic bias for European aesthetics and “standards” has undervalued the contributions of BIPOC artists, not only excluding accomplished artists, but devastating the pipeline for entry-level and emerging artists.

  • Limited representation of BIPOC communities in senior leadership positions has created a glass ceiling for BIPOC theatre professionals and prevents such communities from shaping the theatre field.

  • Lack of BIPOC representation in education and artistic teams creates a space where young BIPOC artists do not have the freedom or safety to create or learn with leaders who look like them, and limits teaching artists from providing leadership and support from a place of shared experience.

  • Engaging in decision-making that impacts BIPOC communities without adequate feedback and participation from said communities results in programming that does not fully address the most important issues to BIPOC communities and reinforces white/European cultural ideas and ideals.

  • Seemingly neutral practices and policies may in fact perpetuate racial bias creating obstacles towards success for those who have had little opportunity for professional artistic engagement (many of whom are BIPOC) and maintain a working environment which defaults to white values of “professionalism” and excludes those with different cultural values.

  • Maintaining early-career opportunities that require self-subsidy creates difficulty for BIPOC artists and leaders to receive the foundational experience needed to progress in their careers and contributes to a lack of BIPOC individuals in leadership positions.

  • Sustaining organizational cultures and norms which protect those who are higher in the hierarchical structures and demand higher standards and expectations for those who are lower in the hierarchy, maintains oppression and prevents the disruption of racism and growth.

  • The work of anti-racism and pro-liberation (and the work of making authentic and great art) occurs at “the speed of trust.” The primary responsibility for forming that trust lies with those who have more privilege. CPT seeks to create a theatre that has not existed before, and we know we will fail at many points along the way. This is neither an excuse for such failure, nor is it an excuse to not move forward. We must commit to failing forward with ongoing assessment, accountability, and change.

  • Create and maintain a working group to lead efforts to move toward a just and equitable organization that is anti-racist.

  • Develop, implement, and assess programs, such as “the season,” arts education, rehearsal process, and support for individual artists, using a racial equity lens.

  • Provide training, mentorship, on-boarding, as needed for staff, artists, and board, focused on retention and success.

  • Ensure that racial equity and anti-racism conversations are integrated into planning meetings, board meetings, and staff meetings.

  • Increase BIPOC representation on creative teams for artistic productions and projects.

 

Cleveland Public Theatre commits to build on current practices by reaffirming our commitment to maintain and further invest in the following work that has been instituted in past years:

  • Produce a season with a majority of plays (from workshop to full production) by BIPOC artists.

  • Provide significant fellowships to BIPOC artists.

  • Provide resources and racial equity training to board, staff, and artists.

  • Compensate full-time employees at equitable rates with a living wage as a base.

  • Craft grant and marketing language which does not promote racist stereotypes and can be proudly shared with the communities we serve.

  • Maintain our investment in and grow the leadership of culturally-specific companies: Teatro Público de Cleveland and Masrah Cleveland Al-Arabi.

  • Collaborate with national, regional, and local organizations who are also working toward greater racial equity.

  • Advocate in the theatre field for antiracism and equity.

  • Advocate to funders, partners, and community leaders for antiracism and equity.

  • Promote other theatres and arts groups with a majority of BIPOC leaders.

  • Consciously work to create safe and vibrant environments in the creative process that center BIPOC perspectives, especially when depicting BIPOC stories.

  • Engage in an ongoing process of assessment of institutional and artistic practices through a racial equity lens and make ongoing changes in order to disrupt and dismantle racism.

At out door and neighborhood programs we do not require vaccination, nor are audiences for the YHAVEN THEATRE PROJECT required to be vaccinated.
