POSITION: Production Manager

REPORTS TO: Associate Head, Director of Production

JOB TYPE: Full Time, Exempt, 12 Months

START DATE: Late September 2022, but flexible

SALARY RANGE: $65,000 - $85,000

Position Summary

This position replaces a role vacated as the previous PM became associate head and director of production. The PM position at the CMU SoD will work together with the director of production, and two faculty members in the Stage and Production Management program to mentor graduate and undergraduate students concentrating in S&PM. This position is responsible for oversight of production operations and production staff. Unlike many PM positions at producing organizations, the line PM duties for all productions are carried out by students filling those roles and being mentored by S&PM faculty and staff. The PM will directly manage non-educational productions within the school. A small amount of teaching may become part of this position over time.

 

Essential Duties

Responsibilities for this position include tasks related to Production Management, Education, and data.

 

Production Management responsibilities:

  • Recruit, select, train, manage, and evaluate production staff

    • Direct Reports

    • Coordinate with 7 production department heads - scenery, props, paints, costumes, lighting, sound & media (5 are faculty)

    • Consult on production hiring of students and staff

  • Create and oversee production department budgets (direct production and overhead)

  • Oversee production capital expenditures

  • Create and manage SoD production calendar

  • Coordinate design and production meetings

  • Facilitate clear production department communication

  • Ensure Health and Safety oversight, Lead safety programs in the production area

  • Top-line production management of SoD productions/events not assigned to students

  • Serve as backup production manager on shows not assigned

  • Act as ad-hoc supervisor to all production department personnel when necessary, authorizing scheduling changes as well as recommending disciplinary action

  • Step in to fulfill vital functions when the Director of Production is absent

  • Maintain currency in theatrical production management trends and practice
 

 

Education / School related responsibilities:

  • Provide supplemental mentorship to PM students on SoD productions

  • Oversee production assignment database and grading

  • Manage safety and production orientation for all incoming drama students

  • Continue to foster relationships with S&PM alumna

  • Strategic Planning


 

Entering/manipulation of SoD related Data responsibilities:

  • SoD assignment/grading database

  • SoD production peer evaluation system

  • SoD production registration/assignment data collection

  • Production accounting receipt collection database

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree required OR equivalent combination of training and experience

  • 5 Years of theatrical production management experience, OR equivalent combination of education/experience

  • Deep knowledge of theatre practice

  • You must demonstrate:

    • Cultural Sensitivity and responsibility by modeling and supporting the schools values

    • Superior skills in Microsoft and Google office suites; advanced skills in using and creating spreadsheets, databases, and Internet collaboration tools.

    • Ability to analyze and understand issues pertaining to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

  • Support the immediate appointment of the advertised Assistant Dean for DE&I position in the College of Fine Arts.

  • Establish an Anti-Racism and Racial Justice course.

  • Beginning in fall 2020, commit to the inclusion and support of the work of BIPOC and other diverse artists and scholars in all class materials, projects, and assignments, as well as in School publications, social media platforms, and the annual season of productions.

  • Commit to reviewing our student recruitment practices to assure that we are attracting a well-qualified diverse applicant pool and to assure there are no barriers to access. The school will provide increased resources for recruitment in order to achieve this outcome.

  • Prioritize efforts to achieve equal opportunity and diversity in hiring of staff, faculty, option guests, and guest artists.

  • Promote and familiarize the school community with the university’s established bias reporting process to better investigate and respond to incidents of concern.

  • Provide budgetary support for the School of Drama’s DE&I Committee to stage events, bring in guest speakers, access publications and materials, and promote activism.

  • Offer open forum sessions and establish affinity groups/safe spaces for ongoing open communication, discussion, brainstorming, sharing, and uplifting all voices in our community.
