POSITION: Head of Props, Opera House

REPORTS TO: Director of Production

JOB TYPE: 40 week contracted year at 40 hours/week, with OT and additional weeks frequently required

START DATE: ASAP

SALARY RANGE: Weekly salary of $1,951.60 with possibility of OT

Position Summary

This is a hands-on position that requires leading crews and executing plans, often times from foreign companies. The bulk of this role’s responsibility is to lead crews during load in, set up, run and strike performances and events on a weekly basis. In addition, the position is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of all props materials and equipment. BAM’s Opera House stagehands are represented by IATSE Local 4.

 

The successful candidate will be a strong leader that is able to work as a member of a large team. This position requires an exemplary work ethic and theatrical experience in managing props both for presented and produced works. This position requires excellent communication in order to work successfully with other members of the crew, Production staff and visiting companies.

 

Essential Duties

  • ​Collaborate with all stagehands, departments and production management to work with artists and companies to present cutting-edge, internationally renowned performances and art.

  • Responsible for performing and supervising properties department operations and maintenance in the Opera House as a working member of the crew.

  • Lead, assign and supervise props crews performing diverse tasks while simultaneously performing his/her own work assignments.

  • Load in, set up, manage all props materials and set dressing for performances in the BAM Opera House.

  • Identify crewing needs for productions and events in conjunction with BAM Production Staff and the Crew Chief. Evaluate potential crew qualifications and ensure they are qualified and match their competencies to position requirements.

  • Work with Crew Chief and BAM Production Staff to ensure support of a diverse and equitable working environment.

    Enforce standards of operation in props that are safe for both personnel and equipment.

  • Collaborate with BAM and Visiting Company Production Staff with advance planning for a show or event by interpreting props documents, including presets, ground plans, running lists, orchestra pit plots, backline lists, etc.

  • Create all necessary paperwork based on above information including equipment purchases, running lists and expendables.

  • Represent the Props Department in production meetings.

  • Perform props maintenance in the Opera House as well as the Attic and Penthouse rehearsal studios.

Skills and Qualifications

  • 7 years experience in props related stage work

  • Knowledge of theatrical, dance, orchestra, and concert props and set dressing, including the ability to interpret props presets, running lists and tracking documents, stage and orchestra plots.

  • Work will at times require working irregular hours and standing for extended periods of time while lifting and carrying equipment onstage.

  • Occasionally required to push heavy weights or lift and carry up to 50 pounds with team assistance.

  • Union Affiliation: If not currently a member, the successful candidate will be required to join IATSE Local 4.

Assistant Carpenter, Harvey Theater

The Assistant Carpenter will work with the Head Carpenter in BAM's 850 person Harvey Theater in managing carpentry and rigging elements for both presented and produced works. The selected candidate will be able to collaborate with BAM and Visiting Company Production Staff with advance planning, interpreting ground plans, scenic drawings, rigging plots and fly cue run sheets. The selected candidate will exemplify strong leadership and communication skills to successfully operate independently and collaboratively as part of a larger team.

  • Assist Head Carpenter in working and managing all load-ins, load outs, rehearsals, performances and work calls.

  • Responsible for performing and supervising carpentry rigging maintenance in the Harvey as a working member of the crew, including operation and maintenance of Harvey automated fly system and motors.

  • Collaborate with all stagehands, departments, and production management to work with artists and companies to present cutting-edge, internationally renowned performances and art.

  • Work with Head Carpenter to identify crewing needs for productions and events in conjunction with BAM Production Staff, and the Crew Chief.

  • Enforce standards of operation in carpentry and rigging that are safe for both personnel and equipment.

  • Represent the Carpentry Department in production meetings.

Skills and Qualifications

  • 7 years' experience working in related theatre/stage work in carpentry and rigging departments.

  • Experience and knowledge of theatrical and arena rigging.

  • Experience interpreting ground plans, scenic drawings and rigging plots.

  • Must be flexible and adaptable in relation to the work and scheduling.

  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods and ability to move throughout the facilities as required daily.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds with the assistance of a team.

  • Union Affiliation: If not currently a member, the selected candidate will be required to join IATSE Local 4.
